What to Expect

Learn more about what your Collaborative Counseling TMS treatment journey looks like...

1. CONSULTATION

Collaborative Counseling TMS offers a free consultation to help determine if Neurostar TMS is right for you. Patients will meet with our Clinical Director to learn more about Neurostar TMS and answer some brief questions. The consultation usually is about 30-60 minutes. If our Clinical Director determines you are a good candidate for Neurostar TMS, she will schedule you for your evaluation with Dr. Greenberger, so have your calendar ready!

Good things to have on hand…

  • Your Medication History
  • Your Insurance Card

2. Evaluation

Once it is determined you are a good candidate for Neurostar TMS, patients meet with our Medical Director, Dr. Brett Greenberger, who is a Board Certified Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist.

Evaluations are 60 minutes and Dr. Greenberger uses this time wisely to learn more about your mental health and psychiatric history.

Good things to have on hand…

  • Your medication history
  • Any information regarding mental health history
  • If preferred, you may include a loved one during a portion of the appointment

3. Motor Threshold Determination

The motor threshold determination is your first day coming into the office and consists of multiple parts.

The first part consists of Dr. Greenberger and a certified TMS Treater working together to determine the treatment location on the patients head. Everyone’s anatomy is slightly different, and therefore treatment locations are personalized to each patient.

The second part is the quickest. It consists of determining the proper dose and motor threshold unique to each patient.

The third part is your first treatment. After the initial treatment session, our system records the treatment coordinates so they do not need to be re-identified in future treatments.

The whole visits lasts about 60 – 90 minutes. You may bring a loved one if you choose to do so, but it is not needed. You are completely awake and conscious throughout all treatments, will be able to drive yourself, and return to regular activities as soon as it is done. Some people experience some slight scalp discomfort at the treatment location after the first few treatments.

4. Treatments

A full course of TMS consists of 36 daily treatments (excluding the weekends). Treatments take as little as 19 minutes per day. Daily treatments are administered by a certified TMS Treater and they stay in the room with you for your whole treatment.

During each session, a cushioned coil is precisely placed against your head while magnetic pulses deliver the therapy to the correct location that regulates mood in your brain. You may feel a tapping, tingling, or warming sensation where the coil is positioned. This is temporary and typically subsides with subsequent treatments. You will be awake and alert during the treatment and may resume regular activities immediately afterward.

Completion Is Key: For best results, it’s important to complete the full number of treatment sessions prescribed by your doctor.

5. Post-Treatment Office Visit

After the completion of your last treatment, you meet with Dr. Brett Greenberger for an office visit. During this visit you will discuss changes effects TMS had on you, ask questions and discuss next steps in your mental health journey.

Everyone is different. It’s important to come to your first appointment prepared with information about your depression treatment history and use of antidepressants. You and our team will discuss your current medications, and then determine your best course of action. Often it is advised that patients remain on their currently prescribed medications throughout treatment.

NeuroStar is covered by most health plans, including Medicare and Tricare. When you consult with your doctor, check to see if you meet medical requirements and other necessary guidelines for reimbursement.

As coverage can vary between health plans, our team will verify eligibility, benefits, and coverage for NeuroStar Advanced Therapy prior to starting treatment.
